Awaji Kawara Magnetic Needle Rest with Needle Polisher
Awaji Island in Hyogo is one of Japan’s leading producers of kawara, traditional roof tiles made from the island’s rich clay. This flower-motif Awaji Kawara Magnetic Needle Rest with Needle Polisher is crafted by the artisans of Irakato.
Awaji Kawara has a history dating back to 1610, beginning with tiles made for Japanese castles and later expanding during the building boom of the Edo period. This piece is a glazed, kiln-fired ceramic tile; its colourful glazes give each needle rest a unique look.
A magnet embedded in the ceramic keeps your sewing needles secure while you work. It also includes a built-in needle polisher. Simply insert the needle tip into the side hole, then pull it out while pressing upward on the base. Polishing helps the needle glide more smoothly through fabric.
