One of the most commonly asked questions about velvet is how to care for it. We've got you! Read on for tips on how to keep your velvet looking plush.
If the pile becomes dishevelled:
To remove creases in your velvet, hold a hand steamer or steam iron about a centimetre away from the fabric and gently steam it. This will help the pile lift and smooth out.
If velvet gets wrinkled:
To get rid of wrinkles in your velvet, hang it in the bathroom while you take a hot shower. The steam will help smooth things out. Once it’s dry, air it out well and give it a gentle brush.
If it gets wet in the rain:
If your velvet gets wet, gently blot it with a dry cloth right away to soak up any moisture. Leaving it damp could cause a stain.
After wearing:
After wearing your velvet piece, use a soft brush to gently remove any dust, brushing in the direction of the pile. Focus on spots like the elbows, cuffs, and hips, as these are areas where the pile tends to get messy.
When storing in the closet:
Hang your velvet on a thick hanger so that it won't wrinkle or lose its shape. Make sure to leave as much space as possible so that it doesn't touch the hanger next to it.
When storing in a suitcase, drawers, etc.:
Fold it gently so it doesn’t get squashed. To help prevent creasing, place a soft piece of paper or fabric between the folds, and try to keep it near the top of your pile. If the piece has embroidery or buttons, lay a soft cloth over those areas to keep them from leaving marks or causing bumps.
